Apparently bowhead whales can live up to 200 YEARS. 200 Years! That’s ridiculous.

Up until recently, scientists thought bowhead whales only lived to about 70-80 years old, but 2007, they caught a bowhead with a harpoon still buried in its blubber. The harpoon was manufactured in New Bedford, MA, which was a major whaling center…in the 1890s. So they estimate the whale survived an attack over 100 years ago!

Bowhead whales are thought to have such long lifespans because they inhabit the cold waters of the Arctic and have a much lower body temperature than other species of whales. The lower an organism’s body temperature, the slower it ages, thus the extended lifespans of bowhead whales.
